Maputo (MOZTIMES) – The president of ExxonMobil for Upstream, Dan Ammann, met last week in Maputo with President Daniel Chapo and, at the end of the meeting, claimed to have informed the President about the company’s commitment to the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project and to local communities.
However, researcher Rui Mate, an expert in the extractive industry at the Centre for Public Integrity (CIP), believes that Ammann’s visit to Mozambique has a strategic purpose: to negotiate tax advantages before ExxonMobil takes its final investment decision, which could happen next year.
Regarding the announcement of support for communities through the construction of schools, hospitals and social infrastructure, Mate contends that this was not the main focus of the meeting, as the amounts involved in these jobs are insignificant compared to the expected investment.
