Maputo (MOZTIMES) – Mozambique’s ruling party, Frelimo, has convened an extraordinary session of its Central Committee for 14 February, with the agenda focused on electing the party’s president, secretary-general, and members of the secretariat.
Following the party’s tradition, in which the President of the Republic also serves as Frelimo’s president, it is expected that, during this meeting, the current President of Mozambique, Daniel Chapo, will be elected as the party’s president, succeeding Filipe Nyusi.
If this happens, a new secretary-general (SG) of Frelimo will be chosen to replace Daniel Chapo, who currently holds the position. Members of the secretariat, including the party’s spokesperson and other officials, will also be elected.
In recent times, there has been debate within Frelimo, with some members arguing that the President of the Republic should not simultaneously serve as the party’s president, claiming that the role of head of state should be exercised exclusively. (MT)
