Maputo (MOZTIMES) – Electoral officers who participated in the 9 October presidential and parliamentary elections are protesting delays in the payment of their allowances by the Electoral Administration Technical Secretariat (STAE).
Stélio Ndachata, Deputy Director of the STAE in the Kalhamankulu district of Maputo, is the group’s national representative. Speaking to journalists on Monday, Ndachata claimed that thousands of officers across the country remain unpaid and are threatening to stage protests outside the residence of the National Electoral Commission (CNE) President, Dom Carlos Matsinhe.
The affected officers include STAE presidents and vice-presidents, sector heads, assistants, and STAE directors. These professionals were responsible for key tasks such as organising voter rolls, drafting official reports, and processing election results.
“We completed all the work and submitted everything, and we’re still waiting. To this day, we haven’t received our allowances,” lamented Ndachata.
Mozambique is currently grappling with severe budgetary constraints, and delays in salary payments have also impacted other essential sectors, including the Defence and Security Forces. (NM)
