Former RENAMO guerrillas were brutally assaulted by officers of the Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR) during a protest in the city of Maputo. According to those interviewed, the riot police used tear gas, batons, and even fired live rounds to forcibly disperse the demonstrators, who were demanding an audience with the opposition party leadership. The group consists of ex-combatants covered by the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) process, and they allege that they are being excluded from internal decision-making and benefits within RENAMO.
