Pemba (MOZTIMES) – Insurgents attacked the village of Miangalewa, in Muidumbe district, on the night of Thursday, 12 June, killing an elderly man and looting food from local homes.
The attack began at around 7 pm, as most residents were preparing to sleep. The sudden sound of gunfire caused panic and forced villagers to flee into the bush.
“We were already asleep when we heard the shots. Since we’re used to fleeing, I quickly woke up and left with my family. We slept in the bush,” said Mamudo Castro, a resident of Miangalewa, speaking to MOZTIMES. “The gunfire lasted until 10 pm. The next morning, we heard that the insurgents found an elderly man and killed him,” he added.
The insurgents broke into several abandoned homes and took food supplies, worsening the already precarious situation of many local families.
Miangalewa hosts a position of the Defence and Security Forces, deployed to protect the population. However, the attack was not repelled by government forces. This is the third attack recorded in Muidumbe district in about a week. The previous ones occurred on 6 and 7 June in the village of Magaia. (MT)
