Nampula Faces Humanitarian Crisis with Thousands Fleeing from Terrorist Attacks

- Provincial government offers humanitarian first aid, but it is insufficient to meet the demand

- United Nations agencies prevented from providing assistance due to the fear of new attacks

Nampula (MOZTIMES) – The recent wave of terrorist attacks in the north of Nampula province is causing a humanitarian crisis, with thousands of people fleeing from their homes in search of shelter in safer places. On their arrival, these internally displaced people (IDP) do not find even minimal accommodation conditions.

The Nampula provincial governor, Eduardo Abdula, accompanied by local journalists, visited some of the displaced people who are now in the Alua Administrative Post in Erati district on Tuesday. The situation he found is dramatic.

Thousands of people, including women and children, are living in the open air, without food and without the minimum conditions of basic sanitation. The current rainy season is exacerbating the situation, increasing the risk of outbreaks of diseases related to poor hygiene, such as diarrhoea and cholera.

During his visit to Alua, the governor brought three trucks loaded with foodstuffs provided by the Nampula provincial government and the National Disaster Management Institute.

At Alua, the IDPs are accommodated in classrooms, which interrupts the classes. 53 tents were erected for the families for whom there was no room in the classrooms. Even so, many people remain without any shelter.

“I am here personally to give you strength, to express my solidarity with you and to urge you not to return to your places of origin until it is safe to do so”, said Eduardo Abdula at his meeting with the displaced people.

A document by United Nations partners, published on Tuesday, stated that there are an estimated 128,000 displaced people in Nampula, but did not specify the period during which these displacements occurred.

Referring to the most recent attacks, the document explained that it is difficult to send humanitarian aid to the victims due to the persistence of security threats.

“At the advice of the authorities, partners in Nampula informed that field missions will not deploy to Memba immediately due to the military operations against the Non-State Armed Groups, and pending greater clarity on the security situation”, the document reads. “INSO has also advised partners to avoid using, until further notice, the R1153 and R703, which are two of the roads leading to Memba town from Erati and Nacala-a-Velha”, the report adds.
