Maputo (MOZTIMES) – The Mozambican government has increased fuel prices, with the new rates taking effect from Thursday. Diesel registered the sharpest increase, rising from 79.88 to 116.25 meticais per litre, while petrol increased from 83.57 to 93.86 meticais per litre, announced Paulo da Graça, Chairperson of the Energy Regulatory Authority.
The decision to increase fuel prices was taken during the government’s weekly Council of Ministers meeting on Wednesday.
This is the first time Mozambique has raised fuel prices since the global fuel crisis stemming from the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz during the USA/Israel strike in Iran.
In recent weeks, Mozambique’s main cities have been experiencing long queues at filling stations, disrupting the economy.
The price of cooking gas (LPG) also increased from 86.05 to 87.82 meticais per kilogramme.
Diesel is the fuel used by most public transport operators and by industry, meaning that its rise to a historic high could affect the prices of public transport and basic goods. (MT)
