Maputo (MOZTIMES) – The Mozambican government has announced the resumption of toll collection on major roads across the country, including in the capital, Maputo, starting this Thursday, 15 May, with reduced rates for all users, including private vehicles.
According to a statement released on Wednesday by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, light vehicles, which are predominantly used by residents in large urban centres, will now pay 30 meticais, down from the previous 40 meticais.
Toll collection had been suspended since late 2024, following protests that challenged the results of the general elections and decried worsening economic conditions. Several toll booths were vandalised during the demonstrations, becoming symbols of popular discontent over rates perceived as excessive and unfair.
For months, the government has attempted to reintroduce toll collection without success, facing resistance from users. This time, authorities hope that the reduction in fees — including for private vehicles — will pave the way for a smoother reinstatement of the toll system. (SN)
