Minister of Education Promises Distribution of Free School Books by First Quarter

- Over six million textbooks needed for basic education

- Government to introduce digital school books this year

Maputo (MOZTIMES) – The Minister of Education and Culture, Samaria Tovela, guaranteed on Mondayin Maputo that all first-cycle students will have access to free school textbooks by the end of the first quarter of this year.

The minister highlighted the importance of providing students with textbooks for the 1st and 2nd grades, which are considered essential for the learning process.

“Our goal is to ensure that, by the end of this first quarter, first-cycle students receive their books,” said the minister. “We cannot allow any student to start the school year without the workbook, as it plays a key role in developing reading skills,” she added.

According to the minister, Mozambique needs to distribute around six million books solely for the basic education sub-system.

In 2024, the distribution of school books was marked by enormous delays, with many students reaching the final quarter of the year without receiving the free books.

This year, the government plans to introduce digital books to mitigate the shortage of printed copies. Tovela explained that her Ministry is working in collaboration with the newly established Ministry of Communications and Digital Transformation to facilitate the implementation of digital books as an alternative complementing physical distribution.

Tovela also discussed the challenges faced by the education sector due to natural disasters, such as cyclones Chido and Dikeledi, which affected northern Mozambique in December, destroying or damaging hundreds of classrooms. Over 126,000 students and approximately 1,800 teachers have been directly affected.

“We are working to ensure that the affected schools are rebuilt and that students can study under proper conditions, even if this requires the installation of temporary tents or makeshift learning spaces,” said the minister. (NM)
