Head of the European Union Election Observation Mission Criticises Exclusion of Venâncio Mondlane from Political Dialogue

- Daniel Chapo continued the dialogue initiative introduced by Filipe Nyusi, leaving the main opposition leader out

- The elections were considered fraudulent by several domestic and international observers

Maputo (MOZTIMES) — The head of the European Union Election Observation Mission in Mozambique (EU EOM), Laura Ballarín, has criticised the exclusion of the government’s most prominent opponent from the ongoing political dialogue.

Ballarín stated that including Venâncio Mondlane in the dialogue is essential to finding a solution to the current post-election crisis.

Former President Filipe Nyusi initiated the dialogue with leaders of the main opposition parties to resolve the crisis triggered by widespread rejection of the official results of the general elections of 9 October, which were considered fraudulent by several domestic and international election observation missions.

Nyusi excluded the runner-up in the presidential election, Venâncio Mondlane, from the dialogue. After succeeding Nyusi, Daniel Chapo continued the dialogue while keeping Mondlane excluded.

“I believe there is no political solution to this crisis without a truly inclusive dialogue in which Venâncio Mondlane participates,” said Ballarín during the presentation of the EU EOM’s final report in Maputo on Friday, 31 January.

Continuing the dialogue initiated by Nyusi, President Daniel Chapo met on 27 January with the party leaders Ossufo Momade (RENAMO), Lutero Simango (MDM), Albino Forquilha (PODEMOS), and Salomão Muchanga (Nova Democracia). The participants agreed on the need for electoral reform to make Mozambican elections more transparent and credible.

Mondlane stated last Tuesday that he had not yet been invited to join the dialogue. “When I am invited, I will present my points of view. I have conveyed this message several times,” he declared.

Mondlane returned to Mozambique on 9 January after more than two months of self-imposed exile and stated that he was willing to participate in the dialogue.

Mozambique’s three-month-long post-election crisis has already caused the deaths of at least 300 people due to police repression of protests, according to data from the Decide Platform, a local non-governmental organisation.

The European Union stressed the importance of a dialogue that includes all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and democratic solution for the country and expressed its willingness to support the process. (RD/NC)
