Police Say They are Investigating Shooting at Home of Mondlane’s Aide

Maputo (MOZTIMES) – The Mozambique Republic Police (PRM) say they are investigating gunshots fired by unknown individuals at the home of Dinis Tivane, an aide to former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, in the early hours of 22 February, although they have not received a formal complaint from the victim, PRM spokesperson Leonel Muchina said in an interview.

The shooting took place at dawn in Tivane's garage while he was outside the country attending to private matters.

"The police are investigating. We have been informed and we are interested in investigating. This is a criminal case, and it must be clarified," Muchina said in a phone interview. "We were alerted to the case through reports. There has not yet been a direct notification from the victim, but our actions do not depend on that".

The gunshots were heard by neighbours, who reported seeing the shooters getting out of a Toyota Hilux pickup truck.

Dinis Tivane is one of the closest collaborators of Venâncio Mondlane, who has become the most prominent figure in the opposition to the Government. In public statements, Tivane claimed the attack on his residence was politically motivated, linking it to the repression of the mass protests.

"I believe there were 50 shots. This is the kind of response we receive when citizens exercise their constitutionally enshrined right to protest in a democratic system," Tivane stated.

The incident comes amid growing tension on the streets, with daily roadblocks across different parts of the country. Tivane has been reporting on his Facebook page that his house has been receiving "visits from suspicious individuals".

In early February, unknown assailants shot the security guard on duty at Tivane's residence during the night. The case remains unsolved.

Recently, Venâncio Mondlane filed a complaint with the Attorney General's Office, reporting the assassination of his supporters and presenting a list of more than 390 victims.

Among Mondlane's most notable supporters assassinated in the context of the elections were his lawyer, Elvino Dias, and the election agent of the PODEMOS party, Paulo Guambe. The two men were gunned down in central Maputo on 19 October, and three months later the police have not been able to establish who was responsible for their deaths. (RD)
