This Is Not the Country Samora Dreamed Of, Says Josina Machel

- Samora’s daughter also spoke about her father’s death, stating that he was assassinated by internal and external forces

Maputo (MOZTIMES) – Josina Machel, daughter of Mozambique’s first President, Samora Moisés Machel, stated in an interview with the MOZCAST podcast, broadcasted this Thursday night, that the country is going through a concerning crisis, far from what her father envisioned for Mozambique.

“Samora dedicated his life to serving the people, and that does not only mean government representatives. It means all of us, as citizens, must contribute to improving at least the essential services,” she said during the interview, which focused on the topic “Domestic Violence: A Survivor’s Testimony”.

Josina also spoke about the post-election protests, expressing her support for the demonstrations, condemning police repression, and criticising instances of violence carried out by some protesters.

“The atmosphere in the country is one of negativity and revolt. The people have been carrying a heavy burden for a long time and are now unloading it onto the streets,” she noted.

“The demands of our people are legitimate, and unfortunately, the way protests are unfolding is not always the best,” she added.

“It is necessary to take to the streets, to demand that our rights are respected and that public services improve. We cannot continue accepting the indignity that has almost become normalised,” she stated.

The Assassination of Samora Machel

Josina also addressed one of Mozambique’s greatest historical mysteries: the assassination of President Samora Machel. She said she believes her father’s death involved internal figures within the regime, in addition to external forces.

“I believe my father was assassinated by internal and external forces. The international context at the time was undergoing significant changes, and Samora had taken a courageous stance. Some forces were not interested in his position and wanted him gone,” she stated.

Josina hinted that the plane crash that killed the former President in Mbuzini, South Africa, was not only planned but also executed from Maputo.

She referred to the fact that the runway lights at Maputo Airport, where Samora and his delegation’s plane was supposed to land, were switched off—allegedly to divert the aircraft’s course.

“We know the airport lights were turned off. Someone certainly gave the order for that to happen. And those who were involved in this act are still alive. They should come forward and tell the truth,” she declared, visibly emotional.

For much of the interview, conducted by journalist Slide Mutemba, Josina spoke about gender-based violence in Mozambique, of which she was a victim at the hands of a former partner. She said the brutality she endured demonstrates that gender-based violence does not discriminate by social class, meaning it is not just a problem for underprivileged women.
