Pemba (MOZTIMES) – At least three officers from Mozambique’s Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR) were killed on Tuesday (21) when insurgents ambushed a police vehicle leading a military convoy of dozens of cars travelling south along the National Road Number 380 (EN380).
The attack took place in the Xitaxi area of Muidumbe district, regarded as one of the insurgents’ main strongholds. It marks the first time that the Islamic State–linked jihadists have launched such a bold assault since the current phase of fighting began, following the withdrawal of SAMIM forces from Cabo Delgado at the end of 2024.
According to sources contacted by MOZTIMES, all the victims were UIR members travelling in a light, unarmoured Mahindra pick-up that was leading the convoy.
The column departed on Tuesday morning from the police checkpoint at Awasse, in Mocímboa da Praia district, heading towards the district headquarters of Macomia, the usual endpoint of the escorted route due to the frequent insurgent attacks in the area.
Despite the high level of risk along this route, which justifies the need for military escort, the lead vehicle was not armoured, leaving the officers exposed to direct fire.
Videos and photographs circulating on social media show the burnt-out remains of the vehicle, surrounded by the charred bodies of UIR officers.
Local sources reported that panic erupted among convoy drivers following the attack, which occurred around 10 a.m. Some drivers made rapid and dangerous manoeuvres to retreat towards Awasse, only resuming their journey late in the afternoon.
The National Road Number 380, particularly the stretch between Macomia and Awasse, has been repeatedly targeted by insurgents. In the past, the attackers have not only launched armed ambushes but also set up roadblocks and demanded cash payments in exchange for the release of hostages. (MT)
