Maputo (MOZTIMES) - The National Council of Renamo, once Mozambique’s second-largest opposition party, expelled António Muchanga from its ranks on Thursday.
Meeting in Maputo, the National Council accused Muchanga of gross indiscipline. The Council voted to expel him from the party by 13 votes to two. According to a report on the meeting by the independent television channel TV Successo, the debate over Muchanga’s future began on Wednesday night and concluded on Thursday morning.
Muchanga’s expulsion marks the latest stage in a bitter power struggle within Renamo. He was among those who strongly opposed the party’s current leadership, headed by former Renamo general, Ossufo Momade.
Momade has been blamed for Renamo’s poor performance in the latest general elections. But it is not at all clear who will succeed him. Momade was elected leader of Renamo at a Renamo Congress held in 2024, and no date has yet been set for the next congress. (PF)
