Maputo (MOZTIMES) – The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) has announced that a new cyclone, named “GEZANI”, is approaching the Mozambican coast and could affect three provinces, namely Sofala, Inhambane and Gaza.

The phenomenon is expected to have its greatest impact with a high risk of flooding in the Inhanombe, Mutamba, Save and Limpopo river basins, and a moderate risk in the Incomati and Umbeluzi basins.

Mozambique is still recovering from recent floods that resulted in approximately 202 deaths, 291 injuries, 11 missing persons and 852,285 people displaced, of whom 196,815 families are currently in accommodation centres.

In addition to 5,290 houses completely destroyed, 183,812 houses have been flooded and 241 sanitation facilities affected. A total of 321,897 pupils, 13,877 teachers, 551 schools and 1,621 classrooms have also been affected.

In light of the situation, the INGD has called for small boats to be removed from the water to safe locations and urged the population to seek information from local authorities regarding available shelters. (MT)
