Maputo (MOZTIMES) – Judges of Mozambique's Constitutional Council (CC), the country's highest body in matters of constitutional and electoral law, have reported receiving death threats via private messages and social media posts, the institution announced in a statement on Monday.
"The members of the Constitutional Council have been targeted with threats, including death threats, sent through private messages or posted on social media," read a statement signed by the presiding judge of the Council, Lúcia Ribeiro, and shared with the press on Monday afternoon.
The threats arise amid a post-election crisis in Mozambique, following allegations of fraud in the general elections held on 9 October. The unrest has led to at least 60 fatalities, as police suppressed protests organised by opposition presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane.
The Constitutional Council is expected to announce the final election results before Christmas, paving the way for a new government to take office early next year. (RD)
