Maputo (MOZTIMES) – Mozambique’s Parliament on Monday approved the transfer of the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) from the Ministry of the Interior to the supervision of the Attorney-General’s Office (PGR). The reform aims to strengthen SERNIC’s technical and investigative nature.
According to the Mozambican News Agency (AIM), the legal revision was supported by all parliamentary benches — Frelimo, PODEMOS, Renamo, and MDM. SERNIC’s previous subordination to the Ministry of the Interior conflicted with the independence of the judiciary, and there had been longstanding calls for its leadership to be placed under the Public Prosecution Service.
Under the new law, the Attorney-General will propose the appointments for SERNIC’s leadership. Specialised units will also be established to combat cybercrime and corruption, recover assets, and conduct financial forensics. (MT)
