Pemba (MOZTIMES) – The presence of insurgents in Nampula province has stepped up in recent days, specifically in Memba district, about 200 kilometres from Nampula city. There are reports of deaths and destruction of property in Micula village.
The reports indicated that, by Monday morning (17 November) at least four people had been murdered. Hundreds of houses were burnt down during the insurgents’ raid, and a number of people were displaced. Among the property destroyed were flour mills, and public transport vehicles.
A video, about two minutes long, seen by MOZTIMES, shows four bodies, all of them men, lying on the ground. Speaking in Emakwa, the main language spoken by the population of Nampula, the author of the video states that one of the victims was beheaded, and the other three were shot dead. There was also a church burnt down.
“These people were killed by al-Shabab. Jamussa was beheaded. António was shot. Américo and Paulo were also shot”, the narrator said as he showed images of the victims’ bodies.
MOZTIMES has information that, in addition to members of the general public, State officials and agents from the Chipene, Mazua and Lúrio administrative posts abandoned their workplaces and fled to safe areas.
Recently, during a provincial planning meeting on the final school examinations, the director of the Memba District Education Service, Silvério Rassul, warned that the presence of insurgents in the region is threatening to compromise the final exams for 1,737 pupils. (MT)
