Pemba (MOZTIMES) – A group of insurgents attacked the village of Ntotwe on Monday night, in the district of Mocímboa da Praia, northern Cabo Delgado province.

During the raid, the insurgents beheaded a resident identified as Moisés António Nahaje, a native of Montepuez and a teacher at Ntotwe Primary School.

According to local sources, the attack occurred around 20:00, while most residents were attending Mozambican Women’s Day celebrations in the village centre. The teacher was reportedly at home when he was caught by surprise.

The attack comes amid reports of armed groups moving southward through Cabo Delgado. Over the past weekend, the villages of Namoro (Montepuez district) and Muaja (Ancuabe) were also targeted. In both cases, homes were burned, civilians kidnapped, and insurgents reportedly remained in the affected areas for extended periods.

These movements may be linked to ongoing military pressure by Rwandan forces in the district of Macomia, particularly along National Road Number 380 (N380), where clashes with armed groups have been reported.

As of publication, district and provincial authorities have not released any official statement regarding the Ntotwe incident. No information has been provided on the number of homes burned or whether there were additional victims.

The security situation in Mocímboa da Praia and neighbouring districts remains volatile, with new flows of internally displaced persons seeking refuge in safer areas. (MT)
