MOZTIMES, Maputo (MOZTIMES) — Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Saturday stressed the critical role of the media in safeguarding democracy, calling on journalists to uphold ethics and strengthen public accountability as the country marks its National Journalists’ Day.

In a message released to coincide with the April 11 commemoration, Chapo said a free and responsible press remains central to building “an informed and participatory society”. The date marks the 48th anniversary of the foundation of the National Union of Journalists (SNJ), a key body representing media professionals.

Chapo linked the media’s role directly to democratic stability, highlighting journalism as a pillar of civic engagement and national cohesion, while acknowledging ongoing challenges facing the profession.

“Commitment to truth, ethics and responsibility must continue to guide the practice of journalism in Mozambique,” he said.

This year’s theme — focused on ethics, press freedom and labour rights — reflects persistent concerns over working conditions and safety in the sector, issues the president said the government is seeking to address.

Chapo reiterated his administration’s pledge to improve the operating environment for journalists, including enhancing protections, professional standards and media freedom.

His remarks come as Mozambique navigates a complex political and socio-economic landscape, where the role of independent media is increasingly seen as central to transparency and governance. (MT)
