Maputo (MOZTIMES) – The Simon-Skjodt Centre for the Prevention of Genocide (SCPG), at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, will conduct an assessment of the risks of mass atrocities in Mozambique.

The Centre has opened applications to select a researcher or an organisation with knowledge of Mozambique to carry out the assessment.

Police repression in the context of the post-election crisis in Mozambique is one of the reasons cited for assessing the risk of mass atrocities.

“The situation in Mozambique is characterized by multiple risks, including a history of mass atrocities, an armed insurgency in Cabo Delgado, and large-scale protests and violent repression following a disputed presidential election”, reads a document published on the Centre’s website.

The results of the assessment of the risk of mass atrocities in Mozambique will be presented to policymakers and other interested audiences.

The Centre defines mass atrocities as large-scale, systematic violence against civilians, including genocide, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing, and war crimes.

Since 2016, the Genocide Prevention Centre has conducted early warning studies on atrocities in Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, Indonesia, and Uganda. One of its main objectives is to raise awareness of countries that may be at risk. (MT)
