The attack took place around 9 am as the officers were travelling in a civilian vehicle. It was not disclosed whether they were on duty at the time.
According to the spokesperson for the PRM Command in Maputo province, Cláudio Ngulele, the officers were ambushed by unknown individuals who opened fire on their vehicle, firing more than 50 rounds.
“The victims were blocked by unidentified individuals travelling in two vehicles, one of which was a white Toyota Ractis, and the other yet to be identified. Using AKM-type firearms, they opened fire,” said Ngulele.
The victims were identified as António Domingos Cavele, a senior inspector in the PRM, and Abílio Janeiro, an agent of the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC).
