Maputo (MOZTIMES) – The government on Tuesday approved a revision of the General Statute of State Employees and Agents, extending the retirement age to 65. For certain professional categories, compulsory retirement may only occur after the age of 75.
The spokesperson for the Council of Ministers, Inocêncio Impissa, explained that “for certain specialised professions, such as specialist doctors, full professors, associate professors, ambassadors, ministers plenipotentiary, minister counsellors, researchers, coordinators and principal researchers, the retirement age may extend up to 75 years,” he told journalists at the end of the government’s weekly meeting.
Currently, the retirement age is 60. However, there has been considerable contestation from public servants, who argued that they were being forced to leave the public service while still fully capable of carrying out their duties.
The government spokesperson added that the new retirement age follows the regional trend among the Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP) as well as the global trend, where retirement ages have generally been set between 65 and 70 years. (MT)
