Addis Ababa (MOZTIMES) - Mozambican President Daniel Chapo is leading the country's delegation to the 39th heads of state summit of the African Union, under way in Addis Ababa.
The summit has been convened under the theme "Assuring sustainable water availability"
An AU release says "this reflects the AU's emphasis on water as a strategic resource linked to food security, public health, climate resilience, energy production and political stability".
The AU adds that key priorities for the summit include "reviewing conflict prevention mechanisms, the Africa Peace and Security Architecture, and governance reforms".
The summit should also discuss how to make operational reforms of the AU, sustainable financing and improving efficiency".
One controversial matter is an attempt by Sudan to have its suspension from AU membership lifted. Sudan was suspended from the AU after the military coup of 2021.
Since then Sudan has been the scene of a bitter civil war between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. This war has created one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. (PF)
