Maputo (MOZTIMES) – The Mozambican Police (PRM) have arrested Sidone José, administrator of Quissanga district, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, for alleged involvement in the theft of donations intended for the victims of islamist terrorism in the region.
According to a report in the daily paper “O Pais”, José was arrested on Thursday night, in the provincial capital, Pemba city, after the authorities intercepted a vehicle transporting a cargo of food of dubious origin. Inside the vehicle, several bags of rice and other items for humanitarian aid were seized.
The administrator was arrested with four other individuals, also accused of being involved involvement in the theft of relief goods.
Some of the seized products had been donated by the World Food Programme (WFP) to support displaced people and households returning to Quissanga, which is one of the Cabo Delgado districts worst hit by terrorism.
Last February, the authorities announced the arrest of senior officials of Xai-Xai Municipal Council, in the southern province of Gaza, for also being involved in the theft of donations intended for the victims of the catastrophic flooding that overwhelmed much of Xai-Xai city in January. Argelencia Unguana, one of the arrestees, was the administrator of Xai-Xai. (MT)
