Maputo (MOZTIMES) - The General Inspectorate of Labour (IGT) has found that the working environment in Standard Bank in Mozambique is causing workers to faint, due to excessive work and pressure from the employer.
According to an inspection undertaken at Standard Bank, among the list of violations of labour legislation that the bank has committed, there stand out “areas with scenarios of fainting due to excess of work and pressure from the chiefs”.
According to this document in the possession of MOZTIMES, the IGT undertook its inspection after countless anonymous denunciations received via the mass media, which revealed violations of the workers’ rights.
In the Bank, there are “workers without work contracts”, or, where the contracts exist, “without a clear definition of their tasks, that is, they can perform any activity”. 80% of the interviewees complain about the assessment model, the document adds.
The IGT decided to impose a fine of 2.8 million meticais because of 33 violations of the labour law.
The IGT inspected 34 branches of the bank and spoke with over 1,000 workers of Standard Bank, one of the “Big Five” in Mozambican commercial banking. (RD)
