Pemba (MOZTIMES) – Insurgents have once again spread terror in the southern part of Namuno district, in Cabo Delgado province, by carrying out a new attack on the village of Muanona, located in Meloco Administrative Post, on Sunday night, leaving at least two people dead, destroying infrastructure and displacing dozens of families.
According to local sources, the armed group entered the village at around 18:00 and remained in the area until approximately 23:00, without any intervention from the Defence and Security Forces (FDS).
During the attack, the insurgents set fire to more than 40 houses and 13 shops, leaving the population in panic. The same sources indicated that at least two people were killed by the attackers, although it remains unclear whether the victims were shot dead or beheaded, a method frequently used by the armed groups operating in Cabo Delgado.
The attackers also looted essential food supplies and destroyed the population’s means of subsistence. Among the reported losses was the destruction of a community milling machine.
The insurgents also reportedly stole 13 motorbikes, which are frequently used as a means of transport in rural areas.
Following the attack, dozens of families immediately fled the village of Muanona and sought refuge in areas considered safer, including the headquarters of Meloco Administrative Post, Montepuez district and other neighbouring localities.
This new attack has reignited the climate of insecurity in southern Cabo Delgado, at a time when the authorities continue to insist that the military situation in the province remains under control. (MT)
