- The Administrative Tribunal says it is digitalising the public contracting procedure in order to reduce the level of human intervention and cut the high risks of corruption

By Noémia Mendes

Maputo (MOZTIMES) – Corruption in public contracting is severely affecting the quality of the jobs and services contracted by the Government in Mozambique. According to the Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce of Mozambique (CCM), Teresa Muenda, extortion committed by public servants in the tenders for contracting the supply of goods and services to the Government occurs throughout the chain of public contracting, from the candidature for public tenders through to the phase of payment for the services provided, and this is resulting in poor quality of the jobs and services provided to the Government.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the Second Forum on Public Contracting, held in Maputo last Thursday, Teresa Muenda, the Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce of Mozambique, declared that corruption is happening as a cascade in public contracting processes in Mozambique.

“If I have a job that I won, and I estimate that this job costs 100,000, for example, I have to give 10% to whoever has to be in the selection of the bidders, plus another 10% for whoever speeds up approval in the Administrative Tribunal. Then, after the tender has been awarded, I have to give another 10% to whoever has to make the payments”, said Muenda. (NM)
