Mozambique Cuts Diesel Price by 4.8%

- Petrol price drops by 43 centavos, while cooking gas remains unchanged

Maputo (MOZTIMES) – Mozambique’s Energy Regulatory Authority (ARENE) has announced a 4.8% reduction in the price of diesel, dropping from 91.23 meticais to 86.79 meticais per litre, effective from this Thursday, 20 February.

Diesel is crucial to the economy, being widely used in agriculture, industry, long-haul transport, and public transport. However, the 4.8% reduction may be considered insufficient to ease the high cost of living, which has triggered public protests in several parts of the country.

Last Sunday, President Daniel Chapo stated that the Government was considering measures to curb the cost of living and highlighted the need to lower fuel prices due to their direct impact on the cost of goods and services.

The price of petrol recorded a slight reduction of 0.49%), falling from 86.25 meticais to 85.82 meticais per litre. As petrol is the most commonly used fuel for light vehicles, this cut is unlikely to have a meaningful impact on household expenses.

Cooking gas, which is widely used by urban households, remains unchanged at 86.05 meticais per kilo.

ARENE attributed the fuel price adjustment to the appreciation of the US dollar and a potential surplus in global oil supply in 2025. (MT)
