New Storage Facility Inaugurated in Maputo Port

Maputo (MOZTIMES) - The Mozambican Minister of Transport and Logistics, Joao Matlombe, on Wednesday inaugurated “Slab 9A”, a new storage facility for minerals inside Maputo port.

According to a press release from the port, this facility, including all its equipment, represents an investment of 9.9 million US dollars.

With a capacity to hold over a million tonnes of minerals a year, Slab 9A, according to the port management, will allow the port to meet the growth in demand from its clients, strengthening the port’s regional competitiveness, and generating significant economic benefits for the country, including the creation of 51 jobs.

Prior to the inauguration ceremony, Matlombe visited the expansion work on the container terminal of DP World Maputo, one of the main shareholders in the port. The expansion is budgeted at 164 million dollars, which will increase its capacity from the current 225,000 TEUs to 530,000 TEUs per year.

During his visit, Matlombe was told that the construction work is now 45 per cent complete. The expanded terminal should start operations in the first quarter of 2027.

Matlombe stressed the importance of the investments now under way for strengthening the Maputo transport corridor and for the growth of the Mozambican economy. He added that the development of port capacity should be accompanied by improvements across the logistical chain.

“Competitiveness is not determined by a single infrastructure”, he said. “The port does not compete in isolation. It’s the transport corridor as a whole that competes”.

“Each investment we make in the port”, Matlombe added, “should be accompanied by equivalent gains on the railway, at the border, and in the systems that support the flow of merchandise”.

The Minister stressed the importance of boosting rail transport, of the continued modernisation of the Ressano Garcia border between Mozambique and South Africa, and of the integration of the logistics systems to ensure that the increase in port capacity is expressed in greater competitiveness of the Maputo Corridor as a whole.

The Executive Director of the Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC), which manages the port, Osorio Lucas, stressed that the investment responds to a growing demand for the services of Maputo port.

“For many years, the challenge was to attract cargo to the port of Maputo”, he said. “Today the challenge is to create sufficient capacity to accommodate the cargo that wants to use the port”.

Lucas said that the demand by clients was exceeding the port capacity available, which is making it essential to create new operational areas to avoid the loss of cargo to other, competing ports in the region. (PF)
