- Former guerillas demand removal of Ossufo Momade and of general secretary, Clementina Bomba

By António Cumbane

Maputo (MOZTIMES) – On Monday, 16 December, the national headquarters of Renamo, in Maputo city, again became the stage of demonstrations by former guerrillas who are demanding that Ossufo Momade be sacked from his post as President of the party.

The protestors also want the removal of the provincial political delegate and of the general secretary of Renamo, Clementina Bomba. They stand accused of responsibility for Renamo’s defeat in last year’s municipal elections and in the general elections held on 9 October.

"We had a meeting when the first demonstration was held, and we agreed that a meeting of the National Council should be held on 15 and 16 December to dismiss Ossufo Momade, but so far nothing has happened", said one former guerrilla. He threatened that the occupation of the national headquarters will continue until the end.

Just as in the first demonstration which took place last month, on Monday the demonstrators closed the entrance doors to the headquarters, which paralysed all activities.

Ossufo Momade has been strongly opposed since the announcement of the preliminary election results which showed a victory for Frelimo and its presidential candidate, Daniel Chapo. Renamo has fallen from runner-up in the parliamentary election to third position with only 20 of its former 60 deputies in the Assembly of the Republic retaining their seats. (AC)
