Maputo (MOZTIMES) – Data provided by the Tanzanian High Commission in Maputo indicate a significant disparity in the balance of payments between the two countries over the period from 2017 to 2021.
Approximately 92 per cent of trade between Mozambique and Tanzania occurs through the Negomano/Mtambaswala road border crossing, while 5 per cent of exports are carried by air and 3 per cent by sea.
Terrorism in Cabo Delgado, poor road conditions, and delays in the implementation of memoranda of understanding on trade are the main factors explaining Mozambique’s negative trade balance with its neighbour, according to the Financial Attaché at the Tanzanian High Commission, Samson Stephen.

The two countries trade a range of agricultural products, with Mozambique standing out for its exports of timber and cashew nuts to Tanzania. Tanzania, in turn, mainly exports tobacco, sisal fibre, cotton and various types of cooking oil to Mozambique.
