Maputo (MOZTIMES) –The former presidential candidate and leader of the National Alliance for a Free and Autonomous Mozambique (Anamola), Venancio Mondlane, has called for three days of national mourning in response to the assassination of prominent Anamola activist, Anselmo Vicente.

Vicente, who was Anamola’s political coordinator in the central city of Chimoio, was shot dead on Saturday by unknown assailants after leaving a political meeting. He died on the way to Chimoio Provincial Hospital.

The Mozambican Police (PRM) says it has opened an investigation and forwarded the case to the Attorney General’s Office (PGR).

Mondlane, speaking over his Facebook channel, called on his supporters and members of Anamola to wear black clothing during the mourning period, which runs from Tuesday to Thursday.

“We are calling for three days of national mourning. During this period, we encourage the wearing of black clothing. I am here wearing black clothing. Anamola headquarters, throughout the country, will be in mourning. Our members, supporters – all those who agree with our protest – will be wearing black clothing,” he said.

Mondlane also denounced the assassination of 56 members and supporters of Anamola in various regions of the country. He explained that the protest is not aimed at promoting street demonstrations, but rather a “peaceful and silent” action in homage to the victims of political violence in the country.

He said there have also been 436 cases of assault, arson and other forms of violence against members of  Anamola. (MT)
