Maputo (MOZTIMES) – The European Union Military Assistance Mission in Mozambique (EUMAM-MOZ) has trained more than 450 members of the Mozambican Defence Armed Forces (FADM) during the first half of this year through 14 specialised training programmes conducted in cooperation with Mozambican military authorities.
The training covered leadership courses, military pedagogy, civil-military relations (CIMIC), tactical command, and institutional advisory support to the FADM General Staff, according to the statement. The mission also launched key programmes aimed at strengthening the logistical and operational sustainability of assets provided under the European Peace Facility (EPF).
According to EUMAM-MOZ, troops also received training in riverine operations in KaTembe. This training focused on embarkation and disembarkation techniques, capsizing simulations, and survival swimming, all essential skills given Mozambique’s geographic characteristics.
Commanded by Portuguese Brigadier General Luís Machado Barroso, the mission comprises 83 military personnel from 11 nationalities. EUMAM-MOZ’s mandate runs until June 2026 and aims to support the FADM in achieving a sustainable operational cycle in accordance with Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law.
The European Union has previously trained over 1,600 Mozambican troops through the earlier EUTM-MOZ programme, including commandos and naval marines, forming 11 Quick Reaction Force (QRF) companies which are already engaged in combating terrorism in Cabo Delgado. (NM)
