Maputo (MOZTIMES) — The Mozambican government approved a new regulation requiring all public officials in leadership positions or those exposed to high corruption risks to submit detailed declarations of their assets on Tuesday, during its 23rd Ordinary Session.
The regulation comes at a time when the country is grappling with persistently high levels of corruption. In 2024 alone, 1,734 criminal cases related to corruption were registered, according to the Central Office for Combating Corruption (GCCC).
The Office of the Attorney General reported to Parliament in April that the State had suffered losses exceeding 413 million Meticais in 2024 due to illicit schemes involving officials from key sectors such as education, health, migration, justice, and the police. In the private sector, the most common practices include balance sheet manipulation, the use of shell companies, and bribery payments. (NM)
